DJ RITU
East London born DJ
Ritu spends much of her time playing ‘mummy’ to her Rottwelier,
‘Dizee Rascal’ and her cat ‘Bubalah’.
Occasionally though, she does a bit of work and she gets out to
DJ...worldwide to be exact! She was one of very few DJ’s that
pioneered Asian sounds into Europe in the 90’s and co-founded the
Outcaste Label, plus cult band Sister India. Her travels have taken
her from WOMAD to The Royal Festival Hall, and from Cairo to Cape
Town but she identifies Spain as her favourite country to play in.
Responsible for a series of compilation albums for The Rough Guides
her music specialisms include Bollywood, bhangra, Asian Underground,
Arabic, Turkish, Greek, Rai, and western dance music stretching back
to the 60’s, hence she is a key figure on the ‘world music’ circuit
and beyond.
She has worked for BBC 3CR since 1992, but has also presented for
BBC World Service, Kiss 100, ClubAsia, and BBC Asian Network, while
regularly contributing to Radio 1, 2, and 3.Her most embarrassing on
air moment was when she tried to wish B21 ‘continued success’ at the
end of an interview but actually wished them ‘continued sex’.
Her previous jobs include selling loft insulation door-to-door,
waitressing at Pizza Hut in The Strand, before finally doing
something worthy and respectable by becoming a youth centre manager… |
